This month I have been given permission to use a beautiful piece of writing by a dear friend of mine – Penni Du Plessi. For more about Penni, please see her website: www.divinespace.co.za This piece expresses so clearly what most of us feel at the moment. I believe this piece will help us through the journey.
Much love, Patricia
The Dragonfly’s Journey: A Mirror of Human Transformation
In the quiet stillness of ponds and wetlands, the dragonfly begins its life in the deep indigo depths of mud, sludge and water. This rich, mysterious colour represents intuition, deep introspection, and the subconscious. Few would guess, watching its iridescent wings shimmer with flashes of turquoise, violet, and gold, that this ethereal creature was once a bottom-dwelling nymph — a predator lurking in darkness. And yet, it is precisely this stark contrast between beginning and becoming that gives the dragonfly its symbolic power.
For up to two years, the dragonfly nymph lives in the shadowy blues and sludgy browns of underwater stillness, unseen. It moults numerous times, shedding layers of itself in preparation for what it cannot yet comprehend. There is no sign of the wings to come — only the slow, persistent work of inner change, echoing the energy of deep indigo and soft charcoal grey—tones of gestation, mystery, and sacred concealment.
This long period of hidden growth speaks to the silent transformations we undergo as human beings. Like the nymph, we often feel submerged — lost in emotion, shadow, or confusion. We may be doing the deep inner work that no one sees, shedding identities, beliefs, or attachments that no longer serve us — releasing the heavy tones to make space for the light.
And then, one day, an invisible call is felt.
The nymph crawls up a reed, emerging into the open air and bright golden sunlight for the very first time. It pauses, still and vulnerable, as the final transformation takes place. The wings — delicate yet strong — unfurl, catching glimmers of aqua, rose gold, and opaline white. What once swam in silence now flies with light.
This is the alchemy of awakening.
The dragonfly reminds us that growth often happens in hidden places. Our transformation is not linear; it may take years of unseen preparation before we emerge into a new way of being. Just as the nymph cannot imagine the skies, we may not yet envision the full truth of who we are becoming — our aura slowly shifting from dense earthly tones to the luminous hues of crystal light, sky blue, and pure white.
In many spiritual traditions, the dragonfly symbolizes change, self-realization, and the lifting of illusion. Its wings refract light into a rainbow spectrum of colour, just as we — through consciousness — begin to reflect the many facets of truth, beauty, and love. Rainbow light carries within it the healing frequencies of all colours — from grounding red to expansive violet — helping us integrate and harmonize our journey.
This transformation is a gentle unfolding. Not something to force, but something to allow — like the dragonfly responding to the natural rhythm of its becoming.
Life is not here to punish us or test us, but to draw out the radiance buried deep within — the inner gold that lies beneath the surface.
May we remember this...
The next time you feel stuck in the mud, just remember:
The indigo stillness is part of the process.
The violet shedding is a sacred process of transmutation.
The golden wings of your divine potential are already forming.
